প্রথম সাফ গেমস (বর্তমানে সাউথ এশিয়ান গেমস বা এসএ গেমস, ২০০৫ সাল থেকে) ১৯৮৪ সালে অনুষ্ঠিত হয় নেপালের রাজধানী কাঠমান্ডুতে। এ গেমসে বাংলাদেশ দুটি স্বর্ণপদক জয় করে। ঢাকায় এ গেমস অনুষ্ঠিত হয় ১৯৮৫, ১৯৯৩ ও ২০১০ সালে এবং কলম্বোতে ১৯৯১ সালে। কাঠমান্ডুতে দ্বিতীয় বার ১৯৯৯ সালে সাফ গেমস হয়। দ্বাদশ সাফ গেমস অনুষ্ঠিত হবে ২০১৬ সালে ভারতের শিলংয়ে।
